Program:  Earth Exchange - Honoring the Forest

Current:  June 18, 2016  in forest near Nederland, 3-5 pm.

Last year the US Forest Service cut away 40% of our forest and left slash piles everywhere as part of their fire mitigation work to address the possibility of a fire near people's homes. It's no longer the same place. The community has mixed feelings about this process.

I live in this area of 122 acres of national forest and love my community of trees.

I would like to not only honor the forest and remaining trees, but to carefully remove some of the logs from one acre near a much visited Cougar Rock and let them be used for firewood, instead of being "burned" someday in the slash pile plan-- just contributing more pollution.

The event is part of the 6th global week-end of events to heal wounded Earth places and is promoted by www.RadicalJoyForHardTimes.org with the intention of “Reconnecting with wounded places, sharing our stories of loss and despair, and making acts of beauty there, we transform the land and empower ourselves to make a difference in the way we live on Earth.”

Earth Exchange 2014: Healing a Wounded Earth Place

“Our Earth Exchange occurred on June 22, 2014 in Nederland with the intention to gift healing to a semi-clear cut National Forest area, sponsored by Our Sacred Earth. Bringing our caring and remembrance of the gifts of the forest to this area, we sang our sacred connection to each of the directions/elements using the song: Earth my Body, Water my Blood, Air my Breath and Fire my Spirit -- we sang in English and then Spanish. Each person found a cut stump and put found plants/stones/charcoal on top as healing and as appreciation..... until a cloudburst came and we took a quick photo and ran for cover. This is the 3rd year after the "cutting treatment" and plants are beginning to cover the ground with their gift of Life.” See Photo Gallery for pictures.

Earth Exchange 2013

Women had come together for our Summer Solstice Gathering and included this Earth Exchange experience as the final ritual. We were in the Roosevelt National Forest east of Nederland off Ridge Road, early Saturday evening 6/22/2013.

We each walked the land which the previous year had looked bedraggled in the fall after an intense thinning and burning of slash. This summer it was a mixture of bright wildflowers (after late winter snows in May) and of areas yet to recover, charcoal burned, or with felled trees.

When we came back together in circle around the stump we piled up with our creative gifting to the Land, we shared our thoughts:

"The wildflowers in bright blues and yellows with some wild pink roses here and there, look like they have space to pop through now that the trees have been removed. In contrast across the road, where the trees are tall, there are very few flowers. It is a pleasant surprise to see the flowers in such profusion."

"What I can feel, still, are areas of neglect as though a job wasn't finished and as though the job done wasn't enacted with loving respect for the land. So what I sense is this Land's need for some loving witness: to acknowledge with compassion what has happened to it and to provide some caring and loving expressions as an encouragement for it to recover. Nature needs to know there ARE humans who care and can see what was done without consideration of its nature and its need for respect."
